Inhorgenta

Hello or I should say Guten tag, as on Friday I will be in Munich for Inhorgenta the international trade fair for jewellery, design and technology. I can't wait! I came home last year feeling so inspired.

I came across Sarah Herriot last year at Inhorgenta i loved her unique use of CAD (computer aided design). Herriot uses rhino 3D to create these elegant yet deceivingly simplistic egg forms.

I hope this years Inhorgenta is just as inspiring.

I found that I'm getting inspiration recently from the geometric and overlapping patterns found in Moroccan tiles and buildings. it maybe because I'm craving a holiday and being inspired by the bold vibrant colours.

 This is a photo i took on holiday in Marrakesh i love the bold bright colours and intricate patterns.

Recently for the Charles Green competition we created a bespoke pendant. I used Moroccan patterns as my inspiration  to echo the emerald cut yellow Beryl stone I was given. The geometric lines and patterns suited it. This is a rendered image of my piece i used Rhino to create the piece and then rendered it in matrix.

Another person that's inspired by Moroccan patterns is Laura Gravestock in her promise collection she draws inspiration from intricate fretwork found in architecture and uses CAD to create her promise collection. Here are a few pieces from her promise collection.

I love the intricate pattern and clean geometric shapes.

iRhino 3D

I found out about this new app from rhino when I was recently researching different CAD software programmes which i found interesting, you can now get an app from itunes called iRhino 3D that you can download on to your iphone, ipad and ipod touch. This app enables you to view and show your designs in 3D, you can also zoom and rotate the image and brows thumbnails for only £2.39.

It would be very useful and easy for people wanting to show clients cad modles.

Inspiring Me: Frank Gehry

Hello and welcome to my blog! I'm a jewellery designer, currently living and working in Birmingham, and I'll be using this blog to share my discoveries from the world of jewellery and CAD (computer aided design).

I'm going to spend my first posts covering the jewellery, art, pictures and events that are inspiring me at the moment, starting with Tiffany architect-turned-jewellery designer Frank Gehry.

I'm often inspired by architecture in my work, so I'm very interested in how Frank Gehry has succeeded in both building and jewellery design - designing beautiful pieces using sleek and simple shapes.

Although a totally different scale, you can see his style clearly when you compare the Hotel Marques de Riscal with the diamond-set earrings designed for Tiffany;

What I really love about Frank Gehry is that you can see his work is his whether he's designing a simple bangle or a complicated layered piece - he's not afraid to experiment but keeps his distinctive style.
